In 1728 William Cray gave “7 acres of land in the parish of Badgworth to certain trustees and their successors for ever, the profits therof to be constantly applied for the teaching of poor children of this parish in reading English until they shall be perfected therein”. Much has changed since 1728 but the Cray Charity is still active and now helping with the purchase of essential books and equipment, or with maintenance costs, principally for students of further or higher educational courses. Applications are considered in the strictest confidence and must be completed and signed by the applicant in person, unless he or she is under 18 years of age.

The Trustees of the William Cray Foundation invite the residents of the Parish of Compton Bishop to make applications for grants to assist with the education of any student of school age or beyond.

Grants can be used for any reasonable purpose associated with the student’s education, even where the expense has already been incurred. Over the last three years the William Cray Foundation has provided almost £6,500 in grants towards things like books, tuition and laptops right through to field trips and equipment for vocational courses.

This was formed in 1991 by a group who share an interest in gardening. Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month, and usually take the form of a talk by a specialist in his or her given subject, or a visit to a garden in the local vicinity. New members are always welcome,we are pleased to welcome visitors at the majority of events

Posters with event details are to be found at local bus shelters and the Village Hall.

There is no meeting held in January or August.
The annual village show of Cross and Compton Bishop is held in August,usually the third Saturday.The event is open to all residents of Cross and Compton Bishop as well as garden club members.

Wine Appreciation Group (WAGS)

These extremely popular meetings are held on an irregular basis about three times a year. Members take it in turn to organise the format, which may be a talk from an expert on wine or a DIY evening. Whatever, wine of varying types is consumed and commented upon. Cost at each meeting varies, but is usually about £6 per person. None of us are experts but we all enjoy wine.

Friends of Compton Bishop Church (FCBC) charity no. 1084558

This registered charity was set up in 2001 to raise money for the repair, maintenance and improvement of St. Andrew’s church and its churchyard. Do visit the church. You will find a simple, peaceful, much loved building surrounded by wonderful countryside.

For nearly 800 years local people have cared for and maintained St. Andrew’s church. FCBC aims to continue this tradition and ensure the building is sustained for future generations, Fund raising events by FCBC have become part of the social life of our community, but membership is so important to our charity’s future, Give us your support. It costs as little as £15 per year, and it is a simple and convenient way to support a worthwhile enterprise.
